Article about Equus
posted by Jas, 09/29/06
Edmonton Sun has an article about playwriter Peter Shaffer and his play, Equus
Equus is seldom out of production, and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will play the boy and Tony Award-winner Richard Griffiths, who plays Uncle Vernon in the Potter series, will step into Wood's role of the psychiatrist in a London production set to open in early '07.
"It's a hauntingly wonderful piece of theatre,'' notes Citadel artistic director Bob Baker. "Like Death of a Salesman, it deals with the human experience.''
Equus revolves around the explosive encounters between 17-year-old Alan Strang, who has blinded six horses with a spike, and Martin Dysart (Wood), a burned-out, middle-aged psychiatrist. Shaffer pushes at the bounds of conventional narrative to force his characters (and the audience) to confront questions of responsibility and ultimate meaning.
At the end of the play, like Dysart, we are left with two unattractive alternatives. One is leaving Alan with his euphoria, which is clearly a terrible psychotic pain, or "curing'' him. But at what cost? To "cure'' the boy, the emotionally inert Dysart must face stripping his young patient of the passion so missing in the doctor's life.
Pushing his story even farther, Shaffer delves into the sex, belief, myth, religion and the metaphysical to unleash the power of the great horse-god Equus himself. Actors in metal headpieces become eerie horses prancing about the stage.

First still from OOTP
posted by Jas, 09/24/06
The Scotsman has posted the first still from Order of the Phoenix showing Harry fighting off the dementors. Update: MTV has posted the five new stills from OOTP and a report
Harry Potter fans have been given a sneak preview of the latest movie with the release of the first stills from Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film in the series based on JK Rowling's books. In one image, Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who plays the young wizard, is seen crouching in an grimy alleyway as he attempts to defend himself from an attack by the Dementors. In another, Imelda Staunton, who plays Dolorees Umbridge, the latest teacher of the dark arts, stands in Hogwarts school wearing a pink tweed poncho. Maggie Smith, as Minerva McGonagall, clasps her arms round Emma Thompson, looking uncharacteristically frumpy as Sybil Trelawny.
Tantalisingly, there was nothing offered of Harry's first kiss with Cho Chang, his fellow Hogwarts pupil played by Katie Leung, the 18-year-old actress born in Motherwell. Crew members who have worked on all five films looked on sentimentally as the two played out the scene - again and again. "We probably got it on the 30th take. My God, it was fun," said Radcliffe recently. "We were awkward and nervous at first but once we got it, it was fine." -- Full report
Emma Watson on her future
posted by Jas, 09/24/06
October issue of Newsweek will have an article about the future of the Harry Potter franchise and an interview with Emma Watson where she talks about OOTP, Dan and Rupert among other things
Meanwhile, girls around the globe will note in these exclusive first-look photos of "Phoenix" that Radcliffe, 17, has short hair again after growing his locks for the last film. "The longer hair made him look boyish," says the film's hair designer, Colin Jamison. "We needed to progress him in age. He's older now, and looks more handsome with the shorter hair." Radcliffe is happy to be done with the mop, too. "It looks great at the end of the fourth film, with sweat and blood matted into it, but we can't have every scene like that," he says, laughing. "And I like to imagine that Harry went home over the summer, angry, and chopped into it himself." In "Phoenix" Harry is coping with a rising rage as he battles the evil new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Dolores Umbridge (Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton), loses someone he loves and learns the truth of his destiny. "This film is about Harry fighting his inner demons more than dragons," Watson offers. "It's about the emotional journey." Whether her journey will include Hermione, she has yet to decide.
Daniel Radcliffe said that David Yates, the series' latest director, is really stretching him as an actor. Is that true for you, too?
Yeah, definitely. David won't settle for anything that looks like acting [laughs]. What keeps coming up a lot is his search for truth in the characters and the performances. He really wants it to be real. The fourth film ["Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"] was sort of about all the tasks, fighting dragons, and all of that. This film is about Harry fighting his inner demons more than dragons. It's about the emotional journey. So I think David is the perfect director for that. Also, his previous work has all been quite politically based, like "Sex Traffic" and "The Girl in the Café," and with this film you see much more of the world outside of Hogwarts. [The book and film deal, in part, with how the Ministry of Magic begins to restrict personal freedoms and civil liberties following a wave of attacks.] I think this film will be quite relevant to what we're all experiencing at the moment with all of the terrorist attacks. The film eerily coincides with all of that.
When I interviewed you on the first film six years ago, Daniel and Rupert were teasing you quite a bit
[Laughs.] Yeah.
What are things like between the three of you these days?
They just just keep me laughing really. They don't tease me quite as much as they used to, which is nice. It is a very nice, crazy friendship.
Do they feel like brothers to you?
Kind of, yeah. It's funny. It's been an intense and very long friendship. We've known each other for six years now, and have seen each other almost every day. I mean, they've seen me in every single state. They have seen me at my most glamorous and they have seen me at six in the morning with no makeup on. They do feel like my brothers. And we've been through all the ups and downs of this mad experience together. Yeah, it's nice.
Interview with Richard Griffiths
posted by Jas, 09/23/06
New York Post has an article about Richard Griffiths where he mentioned Dan and his character in "Equus".
Griffiths will then begin preparing for his next role on the London stage: the psychiatrist in Peter Shaffer's 1973 play "Equus."
Opposite him will be Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, making his stage debut as an emotionally disturbed young man who blinds horses.
Griffiths says Radcliffe is up to the job. "The role is a 17-year-old boy, which is essentially what Dan is. So, from an acting point of view, all he has to do is behave. The boy has no awareness of his emotional impact, so you don't want acting - you want natural behavior. I'm confident Dan will do well."
And if the show's a hit, will Griffiths and Radcliffe travel with it to Broadway? "Oh, yes. Like a shot."

An interview with Warwick Davis
posted by Jas, 09/15/06
In an interview with The Sun, Warwick Davis said he gets on really well with Dan
Warwick, who is now 36 and 3' 6" tall, is currently filming the fifth installment of the Harry Potter movie franchise - The Order Of The Phoenix. He has played Professor Filius Flitwick in all of the schoolboy wizard flicks. "I'm very grateful to have been part of Harry Potter and I'm kind of part of the furniture at Hogwarts now," he admits.
"I'm working on Order of the Phoenix right now. I'm hoping it will be the best Harry Potter yet. They do just get better." Warwick is good pals with Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe due to a shared child actor upbringing. "I get on really well with Daniel. I've known him since the first movie and he's grown up and not changed at all. He's a great character. "The child actors on the film are a lot more professional than some of the adult actors I've worked with. They know their lines, they're there on time, it's brilliant to watch them work."
He continues: "Daniel and I chatted about being child actors. We definitely have had comparable experiences. He just deals with it so well. He's very good and really appreciates the fans." He adds: "I think he'll evolve into a highly-regarded adult actor. I'm hoping he'll make that transition because he has a lot of talent."

A mention of Dan's episode in Extras from The Stage. The second series of Extras starts on BBC Two on Thursday 14 September at 9pm.
Ricky Gervais and Ashley Jensen return to screens this month with the second series of Extras and a whole host of cameos. Think a self-obsessed Orlando Bloom with serious issues about Johnny Depp, or Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe with anger management issues reaching Tourette's Syndrome proportions, as well as David Bowie, Ian McKellen and er… Keith Chegwin.
The Weasleys talk OOTP
posted by Jas, 09/05/06
In a press junket for their new movie, Driving Lesson, Rupert Grint and Julie Walters talk about the progress on the Order of the Phoenix
"I've just finished [on Order of the Phoenix]," Walters told FilmFocus, "it was only ten days of work for me." So what can she tell us of her adventures? Fans of the book will remember one of its most poignant moments as Mrs. Weasley, her character in the film, encounters a boggart - a creature that can transform into what one fears the most - in a dusty corner of the Order of the Phoenix's headquarters; did it make the shoot? "We're not allowed to say!" says Walters, most conspiratorially. We're sure we detect a hint of recognition in her eyes, but she's keeping her lips sealed. "Good try, but we just aren't allowed to reveal what is and isn't in the film!"
Nevertheless, Walters is clearly pleased to be back in the role - she wasn't called to set on the last film, Goblet of Fire, and back in December of last year she exclusively revealed to FilmFocus that she would be on the call-sheet this time around. "[The Weasley actors] sent me a postcard while they were there," she laughed, "It said, 'We miss you; Dad [Mr. Weasley, played by Mark Williams] can't control us!'"
And what does her on-screen son, Rupert Grint, have to tell us about movie five? "It's going really well, actually," he told FilmFocus, "and we've nearly finished it. We've only got a few months left. It's been really good fun, this one." A new film, a new director, Grint was quick to praise David Yates, taking the reins from Mike Newell. "He's wicked, and he's really different to the other ones we've had as well." -- Full interview
