WB to distribute Radcliffe film 'Boys'

Variety reports that Warner Bros. will distribute Dan's December Boys domestically and overseas. The movie opens September 14.

Warner Bros. is keeping Daniel Radcliffe close to home. Specialty arm Warner Independent Pictures announced Monday that it is partnering with Village Roadshow Pictures to distribute domestically the Radcliffe starrer "December Boys," while Warner Bros. Intl. will help Village Roadshow distribute the Aussie-produced and -financed film overseas.

Pic, the first in which Radcliffe has starred since the launch of the "Harry Potter" franchise, opens Sept. 14 in the U.S. Richard Becker's Becker Entertainment produced "December Boys." Marc Rosenberg adapted Michael Noonan's coming-of-age tome of the same name. Set in the 1960s, story revolves around four orphan teenagers growing up in a Catholic convent in the Australian outback. Losing hope that they will ever be adopted, the orphans compete against one another for the attention of a childless couple during a trip to a remote seashore resort. Radcliffe plays the oldest of the four. Starring alongside Radcliffe are Christian Byers, Lee Cormie, James Fraser, Teresa Palmer and Jack Thompson.

"December Boys" has been long in the making. Producer Richard Becker optioned the book in 1992, but it wasn't until 2004 that Australia's Film Finance Group, South Australian Film Corp. and German investor MB 2 Film & Media GmbH agreed to finance. Pic was shot last year on location in Australia and South Africa. "I think 'December Boys' will connect with audiences in all cultures," Village Roadshow Pictures Group co-chair Graham Burke said. Radcliffe will be seen this summer in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," which Warner Bros. unspools July 13.

Looking beyond the role of boy wizard, Radcliffe is presently in London starring in the legit revival of "Equus," for which he's received strong notices. Radcliffe has two more "Potter" pics to shoot, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows."

4. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" (July 13): There a few sure things in life: Republicans fighting with Democrats, Simon Cowell dissing an "American Idol" contestant and geeks lining up for days outside the theater — wearing pointy wizard hats — waiting to see the next "Harry Potter" movie. Hard to believe that it's the fifth "Potter" movie already but if book readers keep coming out in droves, Warner Bros. will keep pumping them out until Harry's as old as Dumbledore. The four "Potter" pictures have grossed a combined $1.1 billion — yes, that's billion, with a b. The only downside here is that "Phoenix" is only the second movie of the franchise to be released in summer, not winter. "Prisoner of Azkaban" was the other, and that earned the lowest of any of the films.

Hpana reports that the Order of the Phoenix international trailer will be debut on AOL UK on Sunday at 2 pm GMT. The trailer will also be released on Japanese television on Saturday April 21. It will be released on U.S. television on Tuesday, April 24 and in Latin America the first week in May. Update: UHP reports that a bad quality rip of the trailer from Japanese TV is now up at YouTube. Update: New still of Harry, Hermione and Ron here

Everyone wants to know: What was it like to meet Radcliffe? "He's so down to earth and normal," Christie beams. "He doesn't make you feel nervous. There's nothing starry about him. He's one in a million. He's 17 and he's had such an extraordinary life—he could be a nightmare and so messed up by his bizarre teenage years, living on a massive film set and having enormous global fame. But he's so lovely and such a gentleman and so polite and intelligent. He's an amazing guy." Is Christie aware that she's now the envy of every Harry Potter fan? "I was a bit scared of the jealous fans," she admits, but they've all been lovely so far."

What about the prospect of having to appear naked? And she's not, after all, alone on stage naked. "Whatever I'm feeling about it, it's a million times worse for Daniel. The pressure on him was very big, but we're doing it together and we both feel very supported by each other. We got on with each other from the word go and trust each other totally, which we need to do to be able to do the scene."

It's been great for Daniel—it has given him the respect he deserves as an actor, and he has proved himself more than capable of doing something apart from Harry Potter. But more importantly than that, the response from Daniel's fans and regular theatregoers and anyone else who has just been curious has been absolutely amazing. The audiences are such a mixture of people, and they all really, really love it. There are hundreds of people at the stage door every night, and they're all very complimentary. That means a lot."
