Magic happens

An interview with Dan where he talked about life, Equus and December Boys among other things. Boys director, Rod Hardy also talked about Dan

I imagine my life would have been really boring up to this point without Harry," says Radcliffe. "It's been so much fun. There's so much I wouldn't have learnt about myself if I hadn't done Harry Potter. Like the fact that I love writing. I never wrote at school because I was never encouraged and, to be fair to my teachers, there probably wasn't much there to encourage, but I've been getting into it a lot more and that's because of the brilliant one-on-one tutors I've had on-set."

December Boys director Rod Hardy knows that having a star as famous as Radcliffe will be a huge boon for his film. "I knew I had to find a name to get the financing and when Daniel was mentioned I thought, terrific, but can I afford him? But that wasn't an issue. Daniel didn't do the film for the money; it was more because he loved the project."

"He has a great sense of humour," says Hardy. "He loves to play jokes; at a couple of functions at my house (in Melbourne) he pulled out a deck of cards and entertained guests with magic tricks. He's very good at it. He loves that kind of stuff and that's what makes him interesting. He just loves life." -- Full interview

How Harry Potter and friends grew up
posted by Jas, 06/29/07
The Telegraph talked to Dan, Emma and Rupert

His height - 5ft 6in - would probably preclude a career as an action hero, but then his ambitions lie elsewhere. He has a keen sense of humour and a quick wit and, with Peter Sellers as his role model, has his sights on dramatic and light-comedy parts.

"It was fantastic to do Equus but I'm not under the false impression that doing one different role will make people suddenly see me as an actor in my own right rather than the actor who plays Harry Potter," he said. "I think if I continue to do other interesting roles, hopefully people will start to see me differently." Daniel was talking in a suite at Claridge's Hotel, having slipped virtually unnoticed past the paparazzi, dressed in a black T-shirt with the slogan: "Flying Saucers for Everybody". "It would probably be my policy if I was to run any kind of government," he deadpans.

"Somebody asked me today what I would do if I was a leader of a country and it would be flying saucers and unicycles - everybody needs a unicycle in life." He has, he says, been plagued by strange dreams lately, although he cannot lay the blame at Harry Potter's door. "I've dreamt I'm being stalked by an England cricketer. I don't know what prompted it - although I've been watching huge amounts of cricket - but for some reason Andrew Strauss was being paid to stalk me. I woke up with a cricket bat in my hand."

On July 9, Radcliffe will cement his stardom by placing his hand prints on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, but he still finds the idea "really bizarre". "It's one of the things I get embarrassed about because it's such a massive honour. It's a very exciting prospect." Despite having been in the eye of the Harry Potter storm for most of their childhoods, Radcliffe and his two co-stars seem remarkably well-adjusted and down to earth. "People ask me if I think I've had a normal childhood - and if a normal childhood is being healthy and happy, then I have," he says.

"I don't feel I've missed out on anything. Perhaps I've grown up slightly faster than some other people my age simply because from the age of 11 I've been surrounded by more adults than kids. I've had a working relationship with adults and that does change how you develop and mature. You possibly do grow up slightly faster.

"The other day, somebody said the last Harry Potter film will probably be released in 2010. I don't know how true that is, but if it's the case then that will have been 10 years of my life and that's a huge chunk, so I'll be sad because it will be the end of an era in a way. But I equally imagine it will be quite exciting to be out of that world."

Daniel is as interested as any of the millions of Harry Potter fans in finding out Harry's fate when the seventh and final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is out. "I have no idea what will happen," he says. "There's certainly a possibility that Harry might die. I've been told that people in Las Vegas are placing bets over whether he'll live or die, which is hilarious. Will it make me sad? No. I think if Harry dies in a heroic way, it's a good way for him to go."

Harry Potter star signs $50m deal
posted by Jas, 06/29/07
Metro reports that Dan has signed a $50 million deal to star in the last two Potter films

The 18-year-old, who can already count himself as one of the youngest rich people in Britain, is set to become even wealthier when he starts filming on the sixth instalment Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince and the finale, The Deathly Hallows. He will be paid $25 million for each film but claims that he's not motivated by money.

"Obviously, I'm in a very fortunate position where I don't have to do things for the money. I can simply do them because there's an interesting character and a good director involved," he told The Daily Mail. "The money is absolutely fantastic and I'm very grateful, but it's not the main thing that drives me. Being on Fortune [magazine] lists is all very nice, but I am my own person. What people write about me doesn't make me who I am."

OOTP Tokyo press conference

First kisses can be tricky. Even for Harry Potter. Daniel Radcliffe — the star of the Harry Potter series — said Friday while in Tokyo for the premiere of the latest installment that it took a few takes to get over the nerves of getting the young wizard through his first on-screen kiss. And even then, he didn't really feel the magic. "When we started it, we were both a bit nervous," Radcliffe said at a news conference. "But after the first few takes, it was sort of like any other scene, which is never really what people want to hear. It doesn't really feel any different, because you are still acting."

In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the latest in the megahit series based on J.K. Rowling's books, Harry comes of age and has his first on-screen kiss, with longtime crush Cho Chang, played by Katie Leung. It was a big moment for Harry — if not for Radcliffe. Producer David Heyman said director David Yates cleared the set to create more intimacy for the scene and the crew crowded around a monitor to watch.

"The makeup artist, who's known Daniel really well from the age of 10, she shed a tear," Heyman said. "For me, it was quite moving." Radcliffe said Japan was a natural place for the world premiere — probably half of their fan mail comes from Japan, he said, and the hundreds of thousands of letters they receive are "beautifully presented."

OOTP review
posted by Jas, 06/28/07
A review of OOTP from the Japan's screening of the movie

The film itself is a solid, occasionally spectacular, wizarding romp which struggles unsuccessfully to give us the thrills and fun we have not already had in previous instalments. It is far crueler than its predecessors and begins to introduce properly the idea that we are no longer in an amusing magical playground, but are en route to an epic confrontation with real victims.

The main story at this stage in the cycle is Harry and Dumbledore's quest to persuade an increasingly paranoid and uncomfortable wizarding world that its unspeakably vile nemesis, Voldemort (played by Ralph Fiennes), has returned. The acting skills of Radcliffe (Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and Emma Watson (Hermione) have improved, but not enough to truly flesh out the characters and provide the narrative depth this transitional, plot-advancing film needs. They have got "angry" and "determined" down pat at this point, but struggle somewhat on the more nuanced grimaces. Harry's bellowing cod-psychoanalysis of Voldemort is jarringly awful.

The director, David Yates, has inserted some lovely touches, including the Weasley twins' explosive transfer from the world of academia to the world of retail. But overall there is a shortage of those joyful little glimpses of the wizarding world's furniture that punctuated and perked up the previous films. The fifth – and longest – book on which the film is based plays a crucial but faintly turgid role in the saga. Much is explained, much is left hanging and there is nothing like the pace of action that readers had grown accustomed to in earlier episodes (especially The Goblet of Fire). The book pulled this off because it was tantalising in what it didn't tell us. The film, meanwhile, a necessary digest of the 800-page book, leaves us faintly annoyed that the true denouement of the cycle is now two movies distant.

Japan rolled out the red carpet Thursday for the world premiere of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the fifth movie from J.K. Rowling's megahit fantasy series. Hundreds of young Japanese fans, many wearing witch costumes and holding magic wands, screamed when Daniel Radcliffe appeared as white smoke spewed on the stage. "Japanese fans are the best!" Radcliffe, dressed in a white suit, said in simple Japanese.

"It's just absolutely brilliant. He's an icon," said 17-year-old Radcliffe, explaining why he's been playing Harry for such a long time. "He is somebody whose character has gotten his generation of kids into reading. So it's an honor to play him."

"Nihon no minasan, konnichiwa [Hello, people of Japan]!," the teen sensation told the crowd as fans screamed his name. "Boku wa Daniel Radcliffe desu. Nihon wa saiko [I am Daniel Radcliffe. Japan is the best]," he said.

"It's incredible," Daniel told AFP reporters. "It's wonderful to come over here and to say hello. I hope people will be impressed by the new characters, the new performances, and the big battle."

AICN has posted their report on their visit to OOTP set as well quick interview with Dan and the cast. A one on one interview with Dan will posted soon.

Daniel Radcliffe – I know it's weird, but I couldn't help starring at the scar on his forehead. He was in costume and made up. I've been in the lucky position of seeing some iconic movie figures in the past and I had a similar experience when I was on RINGS and I first saw Elijah Wood dressed up all hobbit-like. I couldn't take my eyes off of the ring of power around his neck. But Radcliffe was super nice, very friendly, down to Earth and very open. I had the first question.

Quint: From reading the books, Harry's a lot… grumpier… than he has been.
    Daniel Radcliffe: Yes.

Quint: Are you finding it at all difficult keeping him sympathetic?
Daniel Radcliffe: Um… No. I think there are different ways of playing anger. I think a lot of times the actor playing anger tends to shout and that can be very boring and that's when I think you can lose an audience. But actually, what's great about Harry is he quite introspective. He feels all this stuff, but he actually keeps it inside most of the time. This film sees the first sort of release of any sort of rage and anger that's built up over the last… well, his entire life, really. So, I think, particularly when you take into account what Harry's been through, he's very easy to sympathize with because his anger seems… not petulant, but more like a natural reaction to the stuff that has happened in his life. So, hopefully I won't lose the audience too much.

The ups and downs of being Potter film child stars
    posted by Jas, 06/26/07
Dan talks about the ups and downs of being Potter film child stars

Dodging paparazzi and juggling homework with filming are just some of the drawbacks of being a teenaged movie star, the young actors from the Harry Potter film series said. Daniel Radcliffe has played boy wizard Harry Potter since the start of the Warner Bros. franchise in 2001, and signed up to the part until the series ends with the seventh film, slated for 2010.

"The only things that can be troublesome -- there's a lesser degree of spontaneity in my life ... than there would be in other teenagers'," Radcliffe said of his fame, while stressing that he loved the acting and filming itself. "If someone says 'Do you want to come to this particular club?' it could be hard, because you couldn't just go, you'd have to find out what the place was like first," he added, referring to celebrity hangouts popular with photographers.

The 17-year-old, a household name in Britain with personal wealth estimated at over 20 million pounds ($39.98 million), has turned to theatre to develop his career, most recently in Peter Shaffer's "Equus" in which he played a troubled stable boy. "Every night I was coming out of the theatre when I was doing 'Equus', there would be paparazzi there," he told Reuters in a recent interview to promote "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", the fifth Potter film released next month. "So ... I would wear the same hat and the same jacket every single night on the way out, so that it all looked like photos from the same night. It was quite a good idea."

He said his relationship with the media was generally good, although it could get harder when he turns 18 next month. "I just think I'm going to be more sort of fair game," he explained.

'Harry Potter' Casting Call Could Help Ron Weasley Find Perfect Shade Of Lavender
    posted by Jas, 06/25/07
Director David Yates talks about the open casting call for the role of Tom Riddle and Lavender Brown in Half Blood Prince

Get ready to pucker up, Rupert Grint — the upcoming open casting call for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is about to become your own personal casting couch (albeit in a PG-13 world). In the next installment of the series, due in November 2008, Grint's Ron Weasley gets a girlfriend — or, more accurately, a make-out partner — in the form of Lavender Brown. So to make sure Ron gets just the right shade of Lavender, director David Yates has a little test in mind.

"You know what I'm going to do?" Yates said. "I never did this before, but I'm going to get Rupert together with the top five Lavenders, get him to come and read with them and snog with them. It's a chemical thing, and you want to feel that chemistry between them. That will help me decide." "Really?" Grint asked — since this was news to him. "Oh, wow, I didn't realize that. That's going to be interesting. It's going to be embarrassing."

Grint already had his first on-screen kiss in the indie film "Driving Lessons" . Still, even with that notch in his belt, the actor isn't any more at ease with the idea of being instructed at how to tilt his head at just the right angle for the cameras to get the most of his mouth. "It is a bit clinical and they do so many takes," Grint said. "I'm not really looking forward to it."

Even though Yates has already seen a lot of Lavenders, he's eager to test the waters with an open call July 1 in London because of the success they had last time around with finding Evanna Lynch, who plays Luna Lovegood in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," which is in theaters July 11. Though they had a few potential Lunas who were "very, very close" the last time around, as they do with the Lavenders now, the filmmakers decided to throw the auditions open just to be sure.

"We had the biggest, maddest auditions you've ever seen," Yates said. "Something like 18,000 kids turned up, and when I pulled up in the car and looked out the window, the queue went around and around the block. But we found Evanna in that mix, so it was worth it." There will also be an open casting call in London on July 8 for the role of Tom Riddle. Though the teenage form of Lord Voldemort was seen before in 2002's "Chamber of Secrets," the actor who played him then, the nearly 30-year-old Christian Coulson, has aged out of the part. "I think Christian's a brilliant actor, and I thought it was a terrific piece of casting, but he's too old now," Yates said.

Like Lavender, the filmmakers have seen a few candidates so far over the past few weeks but want to find just the perfect person for the part — even if he doesn't look exactly like his predecessor. "What I want is that equality of spirit," Yates said. "Someone who is odd, charismatic, cool, has a quite cold spirit which Voldemort embodies. If I find that, that's the most important thing."

talks about his baring all in Equus

Getting naked on stage helped Daniel Radcliffe lose all his inhibitions. The star of Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix also tells Sun Online that he was happy for friends and family to see him appearing in the buff! "I didn't ban anybody from coming to see me," he laughs. "Being on stage and doing Equus was fantastic – and once you've been on stage naked in front of a thousand people you really feel you can do most anything! I lost all my inhibitions. "It's something I will be proud of doing for the rest of my life."

The fifth Harry Potter movie, which sees him facing arch enemy Voldemort once again, includes Harry's first kiss, with fellow pupil Cho Chang ( played by Katie Leung). Daniel admits it was a nerve wracking experience."I was a bit nervous because it was the scene that everybody was talking about," he says. "But after the first takes it was fine. I enjoyed it."

"In general terms I think both sexes have terrible trouble understanding each other and probably, until the end of time, will be a total mystery to each other!" he admits "I don't think it's all on the boy's side… although I am confused most of the time!" Daniel, who celebrates his 18th birthday on July 23, says he is looking forward to being an adult but isn't sure he's quite ready to grow up. "I don't know what adulthood is like," he says.

"I'm at that stage of being in between being a teenager and an adult. I'm looking forward to being 18 but I don't know what will change. I don't think I'm going to suddenly mature!" Judging by his take on the Harry Potter computer game, he is still capable of behaving like a big kid! "I have played the games and I must confess I got overly competitive with an 8-year-old over the Quidditch world cup!" he laughs. "It was slightly ridiculous."

When asked about to the kissing scene at the London press conference, Dan said, "!t's probably a dull answer because it's the one everyone would expect. Kissing Katie was a very very comfortable experience, especially when compared to being naked on stage. And blinding horses" and on his non-celebrity lifestyle he said, "I don't consider myself a celebrity; because I've known me all my life. What I love doing is acting, rather than all the stuff that goes with it." Update: Dan said honesty keeps him grounded, "You have to make sure that when you're starting out you just tell the people around you to be completely honest with you, so that there's no room for sycophants to creep in. "I think that's what makes the difference. If you have people around you who are honest with you and don't just say what you want to hear, you'll be well-adjusted and you won't be arrogant."

    Potter stars are all grown-up
    posted by Jas, 06/25/07
The Sun has an interview with the Dan Rupert and Emma.

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the boy wizard, is now a handsome 17-year-old with a taste for cool trainers and ripped jeans. So there is nothing worse than people sighing at how sweet he and fellow Potter stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson were when they were all about ten in the first film. He winces: "I had a hideous reaction when I saw a screening of Harry Potter and there was a clip from me in the first film and I just heard loads of girls go, 'Ahhh.' "That was just soul-destroying."

Unlike Rupert, Daniel says he has "not really spent one dime" of the fortune he has earned from the Potter films. Most of the £20million has been kept in a trust for him — which will finally be available to him on July 23, when he turns 18. But Daniel has no big plans for the cash. He says: "I'm quite interested in artwork and things like that but I've never been into cars or anything. "So I don't think I'm going to splash out on a classic car collection, which I think people seem to expect me to do."

But it is not just Daniel who is growing up — in the new Harry Potter film, the young wizard is seen enjoying his first kiss. He says the scene with actress Katie Leung was not very romantic: "We were just in quite a giggly mood and if you watch it you can see me trying to keep it together." Daniel believes that The Order Of The Phoenix features the three young friends' best performances to date. He says: "I think we're a lot better. We have all grown and developed and I think it does add something to the film."

    From AICN

    - Radcliffe – He said he loved the idea of a conclusive ending, which would in essence mean that he thinks Harry has to die. He said if Harry died, it'd be fitting, but he also laughed and said he didn't want there to be another publicity incident where he says something like that and the next day there are headlines saying "Daniel Racliffe wants to kill Harry Potter!"

    - The Room of Requirement set was "one degree hotter than the sun," according to Ratcliffe. Under the tile lighting, enclosed set, fire places always having to be set due to the mirrors that cover the wall… all meant a miserable shooting experience.

    - What do they want to do next? All said they wanted to keep acting. Radcliffe in particular said he wanted to find interesting and challenging work and wanted to experiment with his writing. Watson said she wanted to try some theater and that she loved to sing (which was quickly followed by, "Don't worry, I'm not launching a music career," but that something musical on the stage would be a dream for her). Grint came in saying that he wants to continue to act and "if it doesn't work out I still have the ice cream van, I suppose."

    - Half Blood Prince will be released late 2008 and begins filming this September.

    - Finally, the big tidbit that got all the Harry Potter geeks mumbling in hushed whispers to each other. In the original draft of the screenplay for Order of the Phoenix, they had decided to remove a character from the story. Rowling read over the screenplay and said "I wouldn't do that if I were you," that they were free to do whatever they liked, of course, but "if you make a 7th movie you'll have tied your hands."

Heyman wouldn't reveal who that character was and all the Potter nerds (myself included) were debating the point afterwards. Theories included Grawp, Luna and Bellatrix. Luna might be a possibility, but I thought it might be extra tricky of them if they meant James Potter, who we see in a flashback (those that have read the book know what part). Did Heyman mean that the scene was important or the character itself? Hrmmm…

    From Associated Press

Daniel Radcliffe's teenage Harry has acquired stubble on his chin and angst in his soul, facing a sense of isolation, a showdown with his evil nemesis, Lord Voldemort - and, just as scarily, his first screen kiss. "He is very troubled," Radcliffe, 17, said Friday, ahead of the film's opening next month. "He's troubled by the fact that he doesn't think anybody is believing in him, his friends don't seem to understand him . . . He lets that out in various ways. He lashes out."

"David got us at a time when we were ready to be pushed, we all knew that, and he knew it and he was damn well going to push us," Radcliffe said. "I couldn't thank him enough for that." The result, Radcliffe says, is a more mature and complex Harry Potter, a hero with magic powers but human frailties. "It's nice to know that he's real and he experiences real anger and rage and frustration and loneliness," Radcliffe said. "That's what makes him a proper hero as opposed to the Superman perfect-at-everything sort of hero. Harry's a genuine hero because he's flawed."

Apart from the angst, it's Harry's first kiss with fellow student Cho Chang (Katie Leung) that will likely attract attention from moviegoers. Radcliffe, who earlier this year appeared nude onstage in the play "Equus" in London's West End, admitted to some trepidation about the kiss. "I was a bit nervous about doing it because I've known the crew and everyone for so long," he said. "It was a little bit strange. But it was Katie and we were both very professional about it. "This isn't a particularly sexy or exciting kiss, it's very sweet and very clumsy, like all first kisses are. "

Asked about the greatest extravagance their wealth has let them indulge in, Watson says an Apple computer, while Radcliffe expresses an interest in collecting art. "I've never really been into cars, so I'm not going to splash out on a classic car collection, which I think people expect me to," Radcliffe said. Grint, at least, has bought the vehicle of his dreams. "I've recently got an ice-cream van," he said.

"A couple of years ago I said I would like Harry to die because it's a conclusive ending," Radcliffe said. "The next day the headlines were 'Radcliffe Wants Harry Dead.' "I think he might (die)," he added, "but that's based on absolutely nothing." All three young stars have begun to look toward life after Harry Potter. Watson wants to attend university and would like to appear in a costume drama. Grint, too, wants to carry on acting - "and if it doesn't work out, I've still got the ice cream van."

Radcliffe has already begun to branch out, appearing in the Australian film "December Boys" - due for release later this year - and making his stage debut in "Equus." Radcliffe says he knows some people will always see him as Harry. But he is determined not to be typecast. "I know it's naive to think that if I do one thing that's different, people will suddenly think, 'Oh, he's not just Harry Potter, he's an actor,' " he said. "It's going to take a hell of a long time. But I will work as hard as I possibly can."

Granada Takes on New Ecosse TV Movie

Granada International has taken on the international
distribution rights to the new TV movie My Boy Jack.

Granada International has taken on the international distribution rights to the new TV movie My Boy Jack, commissioned by ITV1 and starring Daniel Radcliffe and Kim Cattrall.

The 95-minute feature from Ecosse Films is based on a true story and stars Radcliffe as Jack Kipling, son of acclaimed British author Rudyard Kipling, who was determined to become a soldier in the First World War. Suffering from severe myopia, 17-year-old Jack was refused entry to the army on a number of occasions until his famous father intervened and obtained a commission for him in the Irish Guards. Shortly after going into battle, he was listed as "missing believed wounded", and Kipling and his American wife Carrie began a frantic search to find their son. Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall will play Carrie. David Haig (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Thin Blue Line) plays Rudyard Kipling, and has also written the screenplay for My Boy Jack, based on his critically acclaimed stage play of the same name.

"This is the moving story of the futility of war and its terrible consequences," said Douglas Rae, the managing director and producer at Ecosse Films. "It is both an intense family drama and also an epic story of war which, although set in the First World War, holds a strong contemporary resonance with the current situations in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are thrilled to have Daniel Radcliffe starring and believe that his presence in the lead role will bring the horrors of the First World War to a new, younger audience."

My Boy Jack, which is about to start production, is directed by Brian Kirk (Brotherhood, The Tudors, The Riches, Middletown), produced by Michael Casey and Douglas Rae and executive produced by James Flynn and Robert Bernstein.

Director David Yates talks about filming the kissing scene in OOTP

Daniel Radcliffe struggled to film his first Harry Potter kiss in private - the entire film crew wanted to see the landmark occasion. The teen wizard landed his first kiss in the forthcoming movie Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix - and it was a proud moment for crewmembers. Director David Yates recalls, "You have to understand some of these people have been working with Dan since he was so high. They needed to experience it because Dan was really a son to them; they've seen him go through all these changes as he's grown up. They got quite emotional watching this first kiss, which was interesting to observe."

Time Out New York Kids talk to director David Yates about OOTP

When you finally did get to the filming, what was it like working with Dan, Emma and Rupert. These are kids who've grown up in front of the world's eyes and who've worked with several other directors within the same subject realm. What was your experience like working with them?
Dan is incredible because he's so enthusiastic and has a tremedous work ethic. He really pushes himself and wants to be pushed, and he's hugely ambitious to get it right. So I really pushed him in this film and I think he responded to that. I had a really exciting moment in our journey together in making the film. In the first couple of months [of shooting], I would say, "alright we have to go again. I don't believe it, I don't think you believe it, I want it to feel realer." And then about two months into the six month shoot, instead of me saying I want to go again, Dan turned round to me and he said, "David, can I go again cause that didn't feel real for me." That was a really great moment because he started to push himself even more. He's incredibly generous and lovely on the floor. He makes everybody feel comfortable and included. If we'd have visitors to the set, which we very often do because Harry Potter's like this magnet for lots of people, he's always very welcoming and very warm. And he's very witty.

But what all three of them have in common is that they're remarkably unaffected by this attention that they always generate. They're very well-balanced and normal, and I think that's an amazing strength. It's a great credit to Chris Colombus and David Hammond and everyone who found them, as well as Mary Stolway who cast the original films, to find not just these kids who fill the shoes of these characters that everybody loves, but in a way, kept themselves grounded. It's also a credit to their chaperones and their parents. They're just good fun to work with. It was a real joy for me. Full interview

    Harry Potter Q&A
    posted by Jas, 06/18/07
The Telegraph has a Q&A session with Katie Leung, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch and Bonnie Wright

    KATIE LEUNG
Was Daniel Radcliffe a good kisser?
    Yes he was.

Did you have to practise first?
No. I think it's better that we didn't practise because it is supposed to be a pretty awkward moment. But very sweet at the same time. It is his first kiss, so it's not perfect, but hopefully when people see it they'll be reminded of their first kiss.

Did they make a big thing of it on the set?
Yes. They were reminding me about it every five minutes, which didn't help at all because I was nervous. But when the time actually came it wasn't so bad. It took about 20 takes to get it right. But that's pretty standard for any scene. Though it is a bit odd when you're trying to concentrate on kissing and there's a cameraman moving around you.

    MATTHEW LEWIS
You're not going to do anything drastic, like Daniel Radcliffe did with Equus?
No. That was a very brave move from Dan, and it's paid off fantastically. But I'm not that brave.

    EVANNA LYNCH
Did you ask Daniel Radcliffe for his autograph when you met him?
No - I restrained myself. But my friends were asking for it. That and marriage proposals.

    BONNIE WRIGHT
Are you looking forward to your onscreen kiss with Harry in the next film?
When I read about the kiss I wasn't expecting it at all. But I suppose I'll get a feel of what's to come when I see Katie and Dan's kiss in this film.

Were you around on set the day it was filmed?
I was there, but it was a closed set so we couldn't watch.

A separate interview with the cast from Basingstoke Gazette

    BONNIE WRIGHT
Did you go to see Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry star in Equus in the West End?
I saw it and I enjoyed it. For him it was definitely a good, good thing to do, because you're so easily typecast as a child actor and I think it's a good move. The play was just amazing - I was so wrapped up in it all.

    When Harry met Cho

News Scotsman talked to Katie Leung about OOTP and that kiss among other things

Kissing a boy is a big enough deal when you're a teenage girl. So those butterflies must have been turning somersaults when Katie Leung puckered up for this year's most hotly-anticipated cinematic smooch. "Of course I was nervous about it," she says, her soft tones betraying a Motherwell twang. "I blame it on the crew because they made it impossible for me to forget. Every day, somebody would come up and say things like 'Are you looking forward to it?' Or 'Euwww, it's going to be really wet!'"

Luckily, co-star Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the eponymous wizard, admitted he was feeling just as anxious. His confession helped calm those frantic butterflies. "He admitted that he was nervous too, which made me feel better because I was a bag of nerves," says Katie. "We joked around, saying 'Have you brushed your teeth?' and 'Have you eaten your mints?' So we were much more relaxed when we came to do it."

"It is supposed to be an awkward moment because it's Harry's first kiss," she says. "So it's very endearing and sweet. I think the director, David Yates, wants the audience to be taken back to the memories of their first kiss."

    The trouble with Harry
    posted by Jas, 06/11/07
More OOTP set visit report and on the set interview with Dan and David Yates

"We shot it for a day," Radcliffe tells me, with a shy smile. "We did about 30 takes. Katie and I were both a bit awkward and nervous at first, but once we got into it, it was fine." The kiss was possibly even more of an event for David Yates, the British director of the latest instalment, and his crew, many of whom have worked with Radcliffe since he was 11 years old and appearing in the first film. "They were gathered round the monitor and needed to see this moment," Yates says. "They had seen Dan go through all these changes as he'd grown up - he is like a son to them, so they got quite emotional."

Radcliffe has grown up on this set, but still, he tells me, nothing quite prepared him for the demands of the fifth film. "It's not physically challenging like the fourth one was, but in terms of the acting it's a lot harder." "Doing the real isolation and anger and hurt that he feels has been a challenge," Radcliffe admits. "Thankfully, I've never been bereaved in my life, so I don't know what it's like, but it is incredibly difficult to act the Sirius stuff."

Edinburgh-based author JK Rowling has also announced that the final book in the series of seven, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be published on 21 July this year, one week after the fifth film hits cinemas. A major character is going to die, she warns the legion of Potter fans. "I'll go with whatever she writes," Radcliffe says, philosophically. "I think it will be quite exciting if the only way that Voldemort could be killed is if Harry dies as well. There is a very strong connection between them. But I don't know yet. I've had talks with [Rowling] but not about that."

As to his relationship with the other child actors in the film, Radcliffe is open and polite. "I think when you're thrown together with two people whom you haven't known previously and you end up spending the next six years together, you had better get on. We're very lucky that we do." He pauses before adding: "I haven't really seen them outside of the films."

I wonder what it has been like growing up in a bizarre extended family on one of the most elaborate movie sets in cinema history. "It's something that hasn't really been seen before to this extent," Radcliffe says. "We're a group of kids growing up on-screen. It's sort of an interesting cinematic experiment." Indeed it is. But we'll have to wait until next month to find out how it's progressing. Full article

Separate report from The Northern Echo

Radcliffe is even contemplating life after Harry. "It'll be strange, won't it?," he says. "Very liberating in a way, but I love being here and have learnt an enormous amount. Knowing there're seven books, that's a definite goal to hit."Unlike other child actors, Radcliffe hasn't succumbed to pressures of early fame and fortune, despite his pay cheques making him one of the richest young men in the country. He's kept a level head, although he's not beyond having fun. "I love playing games with people," he says.

"There was one day where JK Rowling came on set and I had half an hour talking to her, then I went back and made out to the extras that she'd told me the ending." Radcliffe fields questions like a pro, more efficiently and intelligently than many who've been doing it a lot longer. Some young actors might get embarrassed or shirty when asked, by a girl from a teen magazine, if tongues were used in his first screen kiss. "No," he says. "It was a lot more clinical. It's like being in any scene really. If anything, it was disappointing about how unsexy it was." Full article

    December Boys review
    posted by Jas, 06/11/07
Hey I'm back from my vacation, safe and sound and fully recharged, Japan was awesome, hope to go back again someday, now back to work, Moviehole has an early review of December Boys

Prepare to be surprised. Seems the young British face behind cinemas most popular teenage character has a few more tricks in his shimmering sack. Radcliffe's harbouring a chamber of secrets ya see, because in the new Aussie film "December Boys" - yep, he'd be the investment; the marketing angle and so on - he pulls a mighty big rabbit out of his hat. He's so good here in fact he could probably stop taking orders from the 'Phoenix' now and send Potter back home on the loco.

I was lucky enough to catch a screening of the film this week, and though the performances definitely outshine the film itself, it's going to do well. In the Rod Hardy directed drama, Radliffe plays the oldest of four boys, all orphans, who are shipped off – they were picked over the other orphans because this month, December, is their birthday – to stay in a beautiful seaside retreat. The only houses on the shore belong to the couple (Jack Thompson and Kris McQuaide) taking care of the boys whilst they're there; a genuinely nice young couple (Victoria Hill and Sullivan Stapleton) who've got some issues, and a grizzled-old fisherman (Ralph Cotterill) who spends his days trying to catch the ocean's biggest fish.

The boys, not surprisingly, have such a great time there, that they begin to 'put on a show' for the young couple (Maps, played by Radcliffe, seems less keen on impressing them and more interested in romancing the local girlie, played by Theresa Palmer), hoping one of them will be offered a permanent home. Not unexpectedly, tensions arise and the boys clash as they vie for the title of 'newly adopted child'.

Though it's not of the same ilk as some of Australia's grand dramas – it's a cliché, but it's true, they don't make them like they used to! – "December Boys" is still a very enjoyable picture with much of the credit due to its young performers. But Radcliffe really impressed me here. I liked his Aussie accent, I liked his performance and I also thought he had great chemistry with Theresa Palmer. I'll talk more upon the film closer to its release in September.
