Harry Potter Caves In For `Half-Blood Prince`

Hey, sorry for the late update, I'm in the lazy mood at the moment, anyway, Dan talks to MTV about the scene he's looking forward to shoot in Half Blood Prince. Spoilers ahead!

"I'm really looking forward to filming the cave and all the stuff in there with the lake and the Inferi," Radcliffe enthused. "Me and [Michael] Gambon in a row boat for a few days. It's gonna be amazing. I thought it was all gonna be largely visual effects, but they have built the cave," he revealed, confirming that the shoot will be all practical. "So it's gonna be very interesting to film."

Dan talked about Horace Slughorn in Half Blood Prince

Most of the time he's gonna be very funny," star Daniel Radcliffe told MTV News of Slughorn's portrayal in the upcoming movie adaptation. "But then you will really see the dark side of him." The dark side, of course, is displayed most prominently in what's sure to be a vital part of the film – Slughorn's memory of giving young Tom Riddle information on creating horcruxes. Harry is ultimately able to retrieve the memory in a moment of great sadness, when he pleads with a sobbing Horace to erase the damage he's done and honor Lily Potter. It's moments like these, said Radcliffe, that make "the tragedy [of Slughorn] outweigh the comedy."

But while Radcliffe was happy to dish on Slughorn the character, the 18-year-old megastar became tight-lipped when we asked him who would play the slippery Slytherin. (Boy, do we sometimes wish we had a healthy stock of Veritaserum). "I don't know if I can say," Radcliffe sighed. "I don't know if it's been announced, and I don't want to spoil any of our surprises."

Dan talked about the enormous turnout for the Melbourne premiere of December Boys. He also said that he's happy to sign on for the final two Harry Potter movies.

"It was kind of mad, much bigger than anybody, particularly security, expected, to the point where there were cinema staff doing a valiant job of actually going out there and holding the barriers," Radcliffe said yesterday. "That's the thing you always have to be aware of when you're signing and things -- it can get really dangerous but I wasn't aware of it last night."

Radcliffe chose to break up his Harry Potter movies with the Australian-made December Boys, which follows four orphans competing to be adopted. "In my head I suppose I'd always had an idea maybe I wanted to do an indie movie, but if an amazing script for a blockbuster had come along obviously I would have been a fool to say no," Radcliffe said.

Radcliffe's family owns a house in Toorak, but he is due to start shooting the sixth Harry Potter next Monday so couldn't stay on for a break. He was happy to sign on for the final two movies. "I think it would be harder to break away from Harry Potter if I left it at five and someone else came in," Radcliffe said. "I think in terms of moving on it's almost essential that I do all of them, and I want to and I will be."

The fifth and most recent Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, is the most popular film released in Australia this year and the five films based on J. K. Rowling's books have reaped more than $5.3 billion in ticket sales around the globe. Radcliffe, whose family owns a house in Melbourne, will star in the final two instalments. Filming on the first begins this month. After that, he mused, anything could happen.

"Both the wonderful and scary thing about being an actor is you don't know what you're going to get sent," he said, over the screams of the largely female fans. "Anything that's different, that will challenge me, is what I'm looking for." Director Rod Hardy said having Radcliffe star made a huge impact on the film's potential to reach a wide audience.

"What can I say," he said, laughing and gesturing to fans being held behind security barriers. "This film has a heart that … once the word of mouth takes over, will do well. But they'll come because they want to see what Daniel's doing next."

Fans welcomed Daniel Radcliffe back to LA for the second time in less than two months for the Hollywood premiere of his new movie December Boys. And it seems the actor, who adopts an Aussie accent to play the orphan Maps in the new flick, relished getting away from that other well known orphan - Harry Potter.

"It's a slow process and it won't be achieved with just one film," he said. "But hopefully if I do enough different roles, people will start to see me as an actor rather than a character, and if they don't, that's not my problem, it's theirs, as long as it's not the people who are casting me, then it doesn't affect me." The film sees Daniel appear in his first major love scene on camera. "It is his first love scene," confirmed the film's director Rod Hardy. "It goes beyond the kiss in Harry Potter, but at the same time we certainly weren't trying to make a soft pornographic film. "It's a very tender love scene and I think the audience will appreciate it when they see it."

Shmuel reports that he has an interview with Dan where he reprising his role in the play Equus when it moves to the States on Broadway.

“I was getting pretty nervous thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, all these critics aren’t going to go for it because I’m in it.’ And actually they didn’t, which I was relieved about and happy about. But the thing I keep having to remind myself about is this was designed by John Napier, who designed the original; it’s directed by Thea Sharrock, who will end up being one of the most important directors in British theater. And I’m with Richard Griffiths, who has more experience than anyone. So if I’m going to screw up, I could not screw up with better people around me.”

He says stepping back on stage with his co-stars is something he’s really looking forward to. “I’m very excited, and it seems more probable by the day that it’ll happen. And it’s great, that’s terribly exciting; everyone I’ve spoken to has been genuinely positive about it.”

Daniel Radcliffe hopes to debut on Broadway next year in a reprisal of his London role in "Equus," a performance where he shed not only his clothes but also the mantle of Harry Potter. Radcliffe won rave reviews for his performance as a tortured teen-ager during an eight-week run of Peter Shaffer's grueling psychological thriller in London earlier this year, but said the prospect of acting in New York was "terrifying." "It will be amazing, but I will be terrified because I was talking to Richard Griffiths about playing New York and he said the most stupid thing you can do is underestimate New York audiences," said Radcliffe, 18, in an interview with Reuters.

While promoting his latest movie "December Boys" in New York, Radcliffe -- best known for bringing to life author J.K. Rowling's boy wizard Harry Potter -- said "Equus" could possibly open late next year in New York. "I would be very nervous because I think that (the audiences are) even more discerning than in London," he said. "But I know we have a good show, it was a good show when we did it in London and hopefully if we do it again it will still be that good. It has to be better."

Whereas with Harry, it's all the plots and the emotion is through the dialogue. With Maps, it isn't. You have to do the same amount of communication without any words."

"I'd been looking to do something between 'Harry Potters' 4 and 5, and this script came along that could shoot in that gap and it was perfect," he said. "I loved the script. The one of the things that made it stand out was the fact the stage directions were written almost like a novel. Normal stage directions are quite formulaic. With this one, they were beautifully - so much care taken with them, they were a joy to read which makes the script stand out instantly." Full interview

Dan talked about his love scene in December Boys in an interview with Manchester Evening News.

Daniel Radcliffe was hiding a naughty secret when the world got all hot under the collar about Harry Potter's first screen kiss.

Because while Harry's brief snog in The Order Of The Phoenix earlier this year was considered a landmark moment in the maturity of the boy wizard, Daniel had already lost his virginity on film!

Even before he began shooting Order Of The Phoenix, Radcliffe had actually completed a film, December Boys, set in sixties' Australia, in which his character, an orphan called Maps, gets hot and steamy with a girl while on holiday with a group of his fellow orphans, who've all grown up behind the closed doors of a Catholic convent in the outback.

Added to his controversial, full-frontal, performance on the West End stage in Equus last year and the young Radcliffe is going all out to shed his image as a child actor.

"Yeah, it was pretty bizarre, having to keep quiet about a sex scene that I'd done a couple of years before," laughs Radcliffe, who despite the worldwide success of the Potter films, is a level-headed and likeable 18-year old.

"Am I embarrassed when my mum and dad see me in something like Equus or that particular scene? No, there are no issues with me kissing a girl on-screen.

"To be honest, on the first night of Equus I had more things to worry about than what my mum and dad might think about seeing me without my clothes on.

"And the scene in December Boys, which I suppose I'd thought would be sort of cool and sexy, was quite clinical. My definition of a good kiss wouldn't include the word clinical."

Certainly, he was well aware that his first non-Potter film (although he did appear in The Tailor Of Panama before the first one) was something he needed to think about carefully.

"December Boys is a very simple, coming of age story.

"My character, Maps, is very, very different to Harry although I do feel as if personally I've got more in common with Harry because I've spent more time with him.

"Maps holds his cards very close to his chest, whereas Harry wears his heart on his sleeve and is very vocal about what he feels.

"With Maps you've got the same amount of information to communicate, in terms of both the plot and his emotions, but you've got fewer words with which to do it. Maps barely speaks for the first quarter of the film.

Attraction

"The other attraction was that I spoke to a director a little while ago, not someone I'd worked with, and he gave me a very good piece of advice which was 'make sure the next thing you do is an ensemble thing rather than it resting on you in any way'.

"That was what was very good about this and Equus.

"Although my face might be the one that's recognised, it's not really Maps' story."

Radcliffe, who was just 11 when he starred in Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, has now turned 18. But does he feel more like an adult?

"No, but it's interesting you should ask," he says. "The day after I turned 18 I looked in the mirror and thought 'right, now it's time to start growing up and stuff.'

"However, I couldn't figure out any way of doing it, so I'm still wondering about that and waiting for something to change."

Casually, he mentions one of his closest friends is 41-years-old. So does he think his enviable maturity has anything to do with his line of work, where he is surrounded by adults for most of the time?

"I don't know, to be honest. Because I haven't known it any other way. When you're young, the only relationships you have with adults, normally, are with either parents or teachers.

"Being in the Harry Potter films for such a long time, as I have, you have that relationship of working together and so you learn to communicate with them as peers."

Away from the movies, Radcliffe is soon to be seen on the small screen in My Boy Jack, which is based on a play by David Haig, of a true story involving Jungle Book author Rudyard Kipling.

Kipling used his influence to get his 17-year-old son Jack, played by Radcliffe, into the British army during World War I, even though Jack had poor eyesight. Jack was killed in battle and Kipling and his wife spent several years searching for his body.

"For many people my age," Radcliffe observes, "the First World War is just a topic in a history book. However, I've always been fascinated by the subject and think it's as relevant today as it ever was, with young men still sacrificing their lives in the name of war."

December Boys opens on September 14. My Boy Jack is scheduled to be screened on ITV in November.

Bummed because you never got a chance to see Daniel Radcliffe naked? Don't despair — he's bringing "Equus" to the states next year. Of course, that's not the only reason you're interested in checking out the, um, production — we totally understand your deep interest in theatre, especially theatre involving horses and full-frontal nudity.

Radcliffe gave his final London performance in June, but he told MTV News that he thinks he could be doing it on Broadway by "late next year." "There's an internet frenzy of people who think it's happening in the spring, but it would be six months later than that," he said. "In all probability, if everything goes according to plan, it would definitely be me and Richard Griffiths and how many other cast members the unions will allow." (Griffiths, who co-starred with Radcliffe in the play's West End run, also plays Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter movies). "I'm excited. Terrified, but excited."

How terrifying can it be, though? And what would be more terrifying or nerve-wracking — kissing Cho Chang in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," losing his virginity in the upcoming "December Boys," or baring his all on stage? Director Rod Hardy talked about Dan and December Boys in an interview with Moviehole

Melbourne-based Hardy, who made his feature directing debut with 1979's ''Thirst'', says he snagged Radcliffe unintentionally. He had actually offered another young British actor, Freddie Highmore, star of Tim Burton's ''Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'', a role in the film when he got wind of the Radcliffe possibility. "The way I found Daniel is – I'd seen a film called Finding Neverland, with Johnny Depp and young Freddie Highmore; I really liked Freddie. I thought 'there's an up and coming young actor who could bring a lot of heart to the film. His mother is a big agent in London, she read the screenplay and loved it. She became very interested in the project. Then, as months progressed, she said 'How would you feel about having Daniel Radcliffe in your picture?', and I was a bit surprised – he wasn't my first choice, but only because I didn't think we had a chance – but I agreed to let her pass the script onto [Radcliffe's] parents. They then passed it onto him. Within 48 hours there was a response back saying 'they all love it!'. So for a while there we had both Freddie Highmore and Daniel Radcliffe."

Highmore's grandmother became ill and unfortunately passed away so he couldn't take on the role. Thankfully for Hardy, Radcliffe remained on the project. It's probably a good thing that Highmore didn't remain on the picture, because there wasn't a lot of money to pay two big-name actors, let alone one. Hardy says Radcliffe took a sizeable pay cut to play the film's oldest December Boy.

"We certainly didn't have any money. He just loved the product – and he wanted to do something between Harry Potter's 4 and 5. What he liked about the film was its 'simplicity'. And he was fantastic! His parents came out with him – his father stayed most of the time, as his chaperone – as did a tutor, because he was in a very important year school-wise back home, but he was wonderful; he got on so well with the other boys." A review of December Boys from Moviehole

Prepare to be surprised. Seems the young British face behind cinemas most popular teenage character has a few more tricks in his shimmering sack. Radcliffe's harbouring a chamber of secrets ya see, because in the new Aussie film ''December Boys'' - yep, he'd be the investment; the marketing angle and so on - he pulls a mighty big rabbit out of his hat. He's so good here in fact he could probably stop taking orders from the 'Phoenix' now and send Potter back home on the loco.

Though it's not of the same ilk as some of Australia's grand dramas – it's a cliché, but it's true, they don't make them like they used to! – ''December Boys'' is still a very enjoyable picture with much of the credit due to its young performers. In addition to the wonderful Radcliffe (who does an OK Aussie accent too!), Cormie (''Darkness Falls''), and particularly, the great Jack Thompson – in one of his best roles in years – shine. In her few short scenes, Palmer ('''2:37'') also leaves her mark.

Hardy's made a striking beautiful and poignant movie that may have its miniscule problems – the tone's a little see-saw'y for starters – but for the most part, is a commendable achievement. You'll laugh; you'll cry, but most of all, you'll feel goosebumpy good by the end of this. It mightn't be a six, but it gives the Aussie team a nice couple of points up on the board. Full review

Dan has won the Talented Young Person of the Month Award for August, here's the press release from Adam Sibley, Founder of the Talented Young People organisation.

Congratulations to Daniel Radcliffe for winning the first ever Talented Young Person of the Month award for August. Daniel was nominated in to the top 5 for August because of his impressive work on the most recent Harry Potter film "The Order of the Phoenix". Daniel beat off stiff competition from his two partners in crime on the Harry Potter film series Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) and Rupert Grint (Ron Wheasley) as well as British Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton and British singer songwriter James Morrison.

We here at Talented Young People couldn't have hoped for a more worthy winner of the inaugural award. Daniel through his acting on the Harry Potter series of the films has inspired so many young people across the globe and at such a young age has handled the overwhelming attention, fame and notoriety with maturity beyond his years in turn being a great role model for young people across the globe.

Daniel received 47.33% of the total vote with his nearest rival Rupert Grint scoring 30.23% of the vote.
